Day 11: Louie

Louie wants be a lap dog :) Lets help him find his forever home. He is about 3-4 yrs old and a gentle, laid back boy. He loves people, gets along great with other dogs, walks nicely on a leash and would be a wonderful addition to any family. Please contact the Tunica Humane Society for information about adopting this sweet boy.

Day 10: Cindy

Cindy now has her wings. I know many of you already know Cindy's story. Sandy has written extensively about this sweet shepherd but iIn case you're not familiar with her rescue, recovery, and unfortunate passing I'll share some of Sandy's posts below.

"For the last several years, she has been hidden away in a backyard that was so overgrown, when she went down and couldn't get up, no one even noticed. No one cared. This sweet dog has been suffering in silence for a very long time. Today has been a roller coaster of emotion for me. I have cried a million tears, searching my heart, praying for wisdom to know what is best for this dog. At first glance, when you see Cindy, struggle to stand, struggle to balance, struggle to stay upright on her own, it is devastating to watch. Your gut tells you, "She has suffered enough". But then your heart says, "She deserves every chance to experience love in her lifetime, however long that may be".

"I met this sweet dog for the first time today. I visited with her at the vet's office, where she is resting while we decide on a course of action to restore her mobility. My first impression was how calm and serene she is. There was no struggle to stand or even to move at all. She seems resolved to the fact that her hind legs can no longer hold her up. It broke my heart to see her so defeated and yet, she seems at peace and accepting of her limitations."

What you can't get past is the sadness in her eyes. They reflect a life of struggles. It makes me furious to think about all the pain she has been forced to endure. Her precious life has been wasted and I am not sure, at this point, if we can bring her back. But we will go down trying.

"I found my answer today in Cindy's eyes. She wants to live. She wants to get back up on her own. You can actually see the longing in her eyes. So we are taking a Leap of Faith tomorrow and Cindy is going to have surgery on her back, hopefully, to relieve some of the pressure. There are no guarantees at this point but at least we will be giving her every chance possible, to regain some quality of life.I left the Veterinary Specialists Center today convinced that Cindy is in the best of hands with her surgeon. I left there convinced that she will be touched and comforted and loved by their compassionate staff over the next few weeks, while she goes thru rehab. I left there convinced that I made the right decision for her healing"

"Cindy will be moved to Rehab in the morning at Mississippi State. We wanted her to have the very best of care after her surgery and they will be working with her around the clock, helping to build her strength back. Dr. Garcia suggested Cindy spend about 2 weeks in rehab, to get the greatest benefit from her surgery. She is already using a cart and moving around very well outdoors. Everything has gone extremely well and Cindy's spirits are good. She is eating good. I am sure she is Feeling the Love for the first time in a very long time. Today I got a very touching video of Cindy working on her Rehab. I couldn't get it to download here but she has adapted very well to her cart and continues to improve daily. They are working hard to build her strength back in her spine and build some muscle mass in her hind quarters, so that hopefully, she will regain some use of her hind legs over time."

"We could have searched the world over and not found a more compassionate heart to care for Cindy. The last couple of days have not been easy on Cindy or her new caregiver. She and I have talked constantly about the challenges involved in caring for a dog with DM. It is life changing, to say the least. Cindy has very little mobility without the use of her cart. Nancy has had to make many changes to her daily routine, to see that this dog gets all the attention and care she needs. And she has risen to every obstacle. After many tears and concerns, today, everything seems to be falling together."

"Cindy is now settled in her new home. Nancy and I talked for the longest time tonight about the challenges that Cindy will face with the advanced DM. Right now, she has no movement in her hind legs. Prior to her spinal surgery, Cindy was putting some slight weight on her left hind leg but she is not doing that now. She is still taking a lot of medications, which may be causing her to be weak. And she is still recovering from very major surgery. Only time will tell, if Cindy will be able to stand on her own again. Cindy can now move around her new home freely, with the use of her wheels. She has bonded very quickly with Nancy and wants to be right by her side at all times. She went to work with Nancy today. Tonight, one of Nancy's mares is about to give birth and she is sleeping in her barn to be close to her beloved horse. And right beside her pallet is a bed for Cindy, so she won't feel alone tonight. That speaks volumes about this amazing woman who has taken on such a huge commitment. She says, it is nothing, but I am in awe of her compassion. She clearly loves this sweet shepherd already and Cindy is exactly where she was meant to be.. In the presence of her very own Angel…"

"On a happy note, Cindy loves being outdoors. And in her cart, she can run like the wind. She discovered Nancy's horses today and was running the fence line with them. Nancy says, she is quite remarkable in her wheels. She's a happy, loving dog, even with her limitations. And she is very Blessed to have found her way to her new family. We are forever grateful to this loving, compassionate woman for making Cindy part of her life."

"In the corner of my office was a big stack of packages. Christmas presents for Cindy. It was my plan to meet up with Nancy and Cindy sometime before Christmas and deliver all of the sweet packages that had been donated in her honor. Beautiful blankets, precious toys, lots and lots of treats. Sadly, Cindy never got to receive her presents. She went to Heaven yesterday. Today, as I was distributing Christmas presents to our shelter dogs, I thought to myself, "Who would Cindy want to share her presents with?" And my heart turned to Harley. Harley is a white german shepherd and she is also close to the end of her journey here on Earth. She is 13 years old and struggles to get up most days. She doesn't have the horrible disease that Cindy had but her life hasn't been an easy one, none the less. Years of neglect have taken their toll on Harley. So today, Harley was showered with Christmas presents. She got lots of toys and soft blankets to lay on. It made her a very happy girl. I am sure that Cindy would approve...."

Day 9: Mouse

"He Lived Quiet As A Mouse....
His body is growing weary. His life on the streets has taken it's toll. But he is resting comfortably with me tonight. Clean for the first time in his life, his tummy full with something other than garbage, he is loved and he is snoring away at this very moment. Music to my ears.....

I managed to get a tiny little tail wag last night. It was just 2 little twitches of the tail but it made my heart soar. I've been thinking about that moment all day.

I first saw this little dog about 2 years ago in the Walker Sub. He would dart in and out between the houses and trailers, holding up one of his hind legs. I could never get close to him, he would disappear out of sight so quickly. I asked about his leg and a man told me he had been attacked by some dogs and one of his legs was almost ripped off. He never had a family so no one ever took him to the vet when he was injured. His little body healed on it's own but left him badly damaged..

A few months later, I went by Reverend Polk's house with some cat and dog food and I saw this little dog again. He was living up under the trailer next door. I still couldn't get close to him, he was always fast as lightening and no one had ever touched him. He certainly wasn't having any part of me. Then about 6 months ago, he disappeared again. When I asked about him this time, Reverend Polk told me he thought another dog had killed him.So, it was much to my surprise today when I went to check on the injured dog in the Old Sub, there was this same little dog, still surviving against all odds. I started to cry the moment I saw him. It was so wonderful to finally be able to scoop him up in my arms.

My heart was broken that day because all I could think about was how this precious little dog had struggled his whole life, never knowing human kindness. I was overwhelmed with guilt because I was never able to capture him and give him a better life."

Although he he is no longer with us, at the end Mouse knew love. He knew compassion. The Tunica Humane Society gave him that. However short the time, he knew he mattered. Help other dogs like Mouse know love.

Day 8: Minnie

Mighty Minnie...

Minnie and her newborn puppies were pulled from a very high kill shelter in Memphis, Tn.  One by one, Minnie's precious babies passed away and we really never knew why.  Then later when Minnie was spayed, she almost died.  It was discovered that she had a severe blood disorder than may have passed on to her little ones at birth.   After several transfusions, Minnie bounced back, only to later suffer a mild stroke that caused some nerve damage to her hind leg. It does not hamper her one bit. Minnie prefers to be the only dog BUT if there is a dog that does not get in her face she is fine.

None of this has kept this precious pittie down.  Minnie lives at our shelter, finding joy each day by ripping and running on our playground. We feel Minnie is about one to two years old.  She does not make a mess in her run and we let her frequently to have the yard.

Minnie is still in search of her forever family...  They must be extra special because she is extra special.

Day 7: Sugar Bear

"Matted, filthy and starving. That's how we found her. Sugar has spent the last few years of her life, surviving on the streets in Memphis. She is unsocialized, terrified of a leash and frightened of sudden movements. On a positive note, Sugar is starving for love and acceptance. She is taking baby steps each day to her new life. A very gentle spirit considering her past struggles.

Sugar has been in boarding at our vet since the day she was rescued. I have pleaded twice for a foster family for this dog. I am pleading once again. She will never, never get any better until she feels the love of a human family and the quiet atmosphere of a real home, even if it is just a temporary foster home. Please, search your heart and think about this dog. Think about the life she has known so far. Think about being the bridge to her new life. Think about fostering Sugar for a few weeks so she can have the chance she deserves to go to a loving forever home. She needs some work but this one is so worth it... Call me if you can help us with Sugar. 662-519-1700 I need to get her out of Boarding asap..."

A wonderful family did step up to foster Sugar Bear and last week Sandy announced that the foster family was now a forever family :)

Day 6: Harley

HUGS FOR HARLEY....

We still haven't found that "perfect family" for Harley. But we try very hard every day to let Harley know that she is still special and she is loved beyond measure. If Harley's fate turns out that she has to live out the remainder of her life in a shelter, I am just thankful to God that she is with us. This dog is such a treasure.

I have been feeling really sad about Harley the last few days. It breaks my heart that this senior dog is lingering in our shelter. But then this morning, I ran across a picture of Harley with one of our volunteers, right after she came to us. She was so broken. And when I look at Harley now, just a few months later, I have to Rejoice. I have to Thank God for her healing. I am so thankful we saved this precious dog. And she is thankful too.

Day 5: Moses

Calling all Lab lovers...

"I named this big fella Moses. He has been hanging out at the Good Shepherd Church in Robinsonville for several days, lying in their flowerbed. He was very afraid of everyone so we put out our trap late yesterday afternoon. When I arrived this morning, he was munching on the chicken and waiting patiently for someone to come get him out of the trap. He's very gentle and sweet. But still very fearful. Would love to know his life story...."

Moses has since found his forever home but here is a great chance to buy a piece of original art and help a deserving shelter continue to care for more dogs like Moses.

Day 4: Sweet Suri

Suri's story as told by Sandy...

These 2 little dogs were rescued yesterday morning out by the river. Thank goodness someone cared enough to report them to me when they saw them eating garbage.

Suri and Kinley are at the vet this morning and little mama Suri, on the right, is expecting her puppies any minute. Dr. Lisa is going to take Suri home with her this evening, just in case she runs into complications with her delivery. The thought of this sweet dog having her puppies out in the elements is so upsetting. We are SO happy that she was found in time to have her babies in a safe and warm place. God was certainly watching over this little mama dog.

A very heartfelt thank you to Dr. Lisa with Stateline Clinic for taking little Suri home with her tonight. Suri's puppies could come at any moment and we find great comfort in knowing that she will be in the care of our vet around the clock, until her puppies arrive. This is just another reason why we love Dr. Lisa so much... She lives and breathes for these precious animals..

..Dr. Lisa says Suri is doing very well. She ate a big breakfast this morning, then settled right down with her babies. She's got this Motherhood thing under control... God Bless this little family and God Bless Dr. Lisa for her caring heart.

Day 3: Dixie

*UPDATE* Dixie has been adopted :)

Day 3s dog is Dixie  Right now, Dixie is in a wonderful foster home where she is very loved, but she sure would like to find her furever family. Her foster mom said she is just about a perfect dog. She is housebroken, crate trained, very well behaved, rarely barks, not food aggressive and walks well on a leash. Dixie is about 7-8 months old now, a pit mix and about 40lbs. She is very sweet and gentle, great with kids and other dogs. She likes to play but also loves to snuggle and be loved on. Dixie is up to date on vaccine and spayed, and her adoption fee is $100. Please contact the Tunica Humane Society for more information on this precious pup.

Day 2: Help Find Annie

Sweet Annie's life had turned around.  And then she slipped away. She has been missing for a couple months now but no one is giving up hope. Despite several reported sightings and a large reward she is still on the run. Please share her information and lets help get Annie home.

Here is a little bit of her backstory. "We have had some wonderful things happen at our shelter over the last few days. We are feeling very Blessed, to say the least. But I can't fully express how happy we are for Annie. This precious dog had become so depressed at our shelter. She had no interest in eating or playing with other dogs. I knew we had to do something for Annie quickly and moving her to a foster home with Denise and Jerry Bennett seemed like the Miracle we needed to pull her back out of the darkness.

Annie's transformation in just a few short days has been amazing. I give all of the credit to Jerry and Denise. They have adopted 3 other dogs from THS, each with their own set of issues, and they are precious, loving dogs today. Annie immediately took to Jerry. She started following him all over the house right off the bat. She doesn't trust easily so that says volumes about Jerry. Denise told me all of her dogs have beds in their bedroom and Annie decided she would sleep with the pack last night. That was huge for Annie. This morning she is following Denise around and welcomed a rub to her head without cowering like she did at the shelter. And best of all, Annie is eating again...

Annie's rebirth is a testament to what a difference a loving home can make to these troubled animals that end up in our shelter. Even a shelter as loving as ours. Annie needed out and I can never say thank you enough, to Jerry and Denise."
